Tohoku University Technology: Method for Maintaining the Undifferentiated State of Mesenchymal Stem Cells: T16-082
Undifferentiated mesenchymal stem cells have been revived!! A culture method that holds promise for application in bone augmentation therapy.
Highly purified mesenchymal stem cells have the ability to differentiate not only into mesenchymal cells but also into cells derived from neural crest stem cells. However, when cultured in a flat, adherent manner on a culture dish, there was a challenge of reduced proliferation ability and easy loss of undifferentiated characteristics as stem cells. The present invention has discovered that mesenchymal stem cells (which have lost their undifferentiated state) can form cell aggregates through suspension culture, maintaining (recovering) their proliferation ability and undifferentiated state, and that these cell aggregates can be utilized as a source of stem cells.
